Mystical Weapons - Live In Iceland

Experimental three piece Mystical Weapons - comprised of the Sean Lennon, Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier, and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily - have a new LP due out this Friday, which includes the here-there-everywhere free form jazz of "Live In Iceland."

The digitally-only cut is as free-form and chaotic as possible, scrounging jazz and ambient pieces into a kinetic frenzy. Stream it below and order Crotesque on Brooklyn's Northern Spy Records.

Four Tet - Gillie Amma, I Love You

Transgressive North and Scottish Love in Action have put together a masterful collections of artists for very admirable cause. The Everything Is New project was created to aid the Dalit, better-known as the "untouchable" children of Southeast Asia, releasing two separate projects. The first of which is the 11-track Sun Choir album curated by English band Marram, which also features help from the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Owen Pallett, and more. The project was recorded over a span of six years on three different continents.

The second piece of the project is the utterly-massive 29-track BOATS, which features Four Tet's "Gillie Amma, I Love You." That track (available below) and the rest of BOATS are individual tracks built from samples of the Light Of Love Children's Choir featured on the aforementioned Sun Choir, in which the artist can choose to do with what they wish.

The lengthy artist list included on BOATS include; Four Tet, Gang Gang Dance, No Age, Dan Deacon, Bear in Heaven, Rustie, Son Lux, YACHT, Califone, Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), Sun Airway, Taken by Trees, Capybara, Deerhoof, doseone, El Guincho, Keepaway, Lucky Dragons, Julian Lynch, Matthewdavid, Max Tundra, Physical Forms, Ramona Falls, The Ruby Suns, rRoxymore, Slanter, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, and White Hinterland.

New Deerhoof video - Breakup Songs

The always wondrously-creative Deerhoof debuted the title track video from the band's most recent LP Breakup Songs, from director Pieter Dirkx. He manages to get the whole Cult Of The Birdman shtick down fairly smoothly, and even leaves off on a cliffhanger (whether that's solved or not is unknown).

Review: Buke & Gase @ Kung Fu Necktie (Philadelphia, Oct. 11)

The collective description I've heard over and over again of NY duo Buke & Gase is how they can sound larger than the sum of their parts. Sitting calmly in front of a small crowd at Philadelphia's Kung Fu Necktie last night, Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez moved through subtle rhythms and movements with every appendage. The floor beneath them was littered with peddles - many of which Sanchez makes himself, including his modified six string bass - a bass drum, and a cymbal to complete the illusion of a full backing band.

The more the short set went along, the more the extemporaneous pieces came into play, parlaying Dyer's vocals with harmonizing effects and other nifty gadgets that played the part of what seemed like a keyboard. There just seemed to be so much going on at once, despite the relative tameness of the parts sitting on the dimly lit stage.

And that, in itself, is an unfortunate fault. Despite the creativity and DIY approach, which is something you can really appreciate, there's a cataclysm of what can be done. The levels on Dyer's guitar and Sanchez' bass hardly change during the show, and the vocals - while pretty at times - become garbled in the scope of everything.  To the casual listener, there's not too much assurance of when their 2010 debut Riposte goes into their recently released EP Function Falls. But the result, more often than not, touches base with groups like Deerhoof and Dirty Projectors. Refined uniqueness, just borderline their own.

The band's tour continues tonight at New York City's Mercury Lounge. Tickets are still available.

This excellent new track from wonky art-rock San Francisco veterans Deerhoof comes from the band's 12th record Breakup Songs. The LP is slated for release September 4 via Polyvinyl Records, but for now check out "Fete d’Adieu" below.

Deerhoof, the misanthropic San Francisco four-piece more well-known for their utter fascination with an abundance of uncoordinated, unfiltered pop messy mesh, have been largely quiet since their 2008 release Offend Maggie.
