#10: The Haxan Cloak - Excavation

Death rears uncomfortably close to reality on Excavation, the second album from London producer The Haxan Cloak. Rather than a straight-forward anecdote, Excavation acts as a concept of death; of an improbable reality that is beyond any of our reasoning. The 51-minute album breathes as one piece, without any cause for break in the journey of the afterlife. It's relentless, gnawing, even therapeutic in a sense, despite the nightmare gash of the opener "Consumed." Few albums in 2013 dealt with heavy themes so thoughtfully, and even fewer came out so pristine.
#9: Autre Ne Veut - Anxiety

The referendum of indie standby's usually relegate away from full-tilt emotions. The concept of simply belting about love and loneliness is done, and has been done by some of the industry's most miraculous figures. So why would an album like Anxiety, the second from singer-songwriter Autre Ne Veut - Arthur Ashin - come off so strong, simply staying with those subjects? The production, for one, is stellar. Samples rear through unseen corners, like the metallic jolt of horns on "Counting," coupled with flourishing chorus after flourishing chorus. In another sense, its an old idea done exhaustively well.
#8: DJ Koze - Amygdala

German producer DJ Koze rarely seemed to be a preeminent force until Amygdala. A figure in the European DJ scene for years, Koze released a plethora of singles and remixes throughout the 2000s, earning a standout reputation in his native land of late-late night clubs and metallic discotheques. So Amygdala is as much of a marvel as it is an absolute surprise. Enlisting a gamut of talent throughout the record, Stefan Kozella flexes his producer muscles, carving ponderous pop craft and delicate intricacies. His personality (see: album cover) ekes through as well, making the album as charming as it is refreshing.
#7: Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap

The year's best mixtape jockeys between Midwest soul and West coast cool from the 20-year-old phenom Chance The Rapper. Despite his age, Chance has a penchant for melancholic nostalgia, whether its his home on "Cocoa Butter Kiss" or self-discovery on "Favorite Song." But no where on Acid Rap is Chance just drudging through the jaded motions. He's a kid, after all, but his ability to tap his artistic building blocks into genre-melting material makes Acid Rap a statue of accessibility. Party music, maybe. Drug music, yes. But something that can be heard anywhere and make sense.
#6: Jon Hopkins - Immunity

Cycling through Immunity, the fourth album from UK producer Jon Hopkins, and the motions start to become evidently clear. He's diligent, prodding through boundless and purposeful repetition. Its dance in its most minimal, human form, wondrous in an almost natural sense. Which, is a marvel; there's few forces that mesh as poorly as natural landscapes and chrome dance beats. But here, Hopkins seems to pool the two ideas together so effortless, and so richly that it might force others to rethink their production methods.
#5: Autechre - Exai

Veteran production duo Autechre have always seemed to be background figures to the likes of Aphex Twin. Both artists have been tagged with the conscious IDM label, which seems to an affixed terminology to brain-scribbled electronica. The beats on Exai, the Manchester duo's 11th official studio album, akin to that title far more than its previous work, jumble with maddening, chaotic precision. The dance elements have been surgically removed with a transparent desire to make something totally new, and potentially off-putting. Because of that it's quite a challenge to march through, but as an amalgamation of ideas, it creates a wonderful precedent.
#4: Arcade Fire - Reflektor

Arcade Fire have found themselves to be in a weird position. They're the poser-children of indie success, earning modest popularity, wild critical praise, awards, and an attachment to indie as the icons for the next generation. It's hard to see when an act is truly in its prime; a concept that seems to be precluded with a reflection (ha) in history). But nine years after the smash of Funeral, we're still in the prime era of Arcade Fire music. Reflektor isn't Funeral by any stretch - that seems like an impossible task for any group, not even the one which actually made the music. Producer James Murphy helped the Montreal band tweak its approach, adding new wave inflections modeled after the band's idealistic hero David Bowie. They also brought in the band's well-known Haitian influences, rather than simply talking about them for the double-LP. The scatter of inspirations leave for some pleasant, if not amazing moments. But its at the end with the three-track knockout "Afterlife," "Porno," and "Supersymmetry" that serve a reminder of the awesome power the band always had.
#3: Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels

Run The Jewels, the debut album from mega-duo El-P and Killer Mike, runs through like a arial assault. The heavy verses, "burning and cursing" from the two punch through the gut like pair of heavyweights in a bar fight. Race, poverty, and death play a heavy theme here, usually by Killer Mike's less-than approving opinion on law inforcement and everyone's favorite rap stars. Because when you travel through Run The Jewels, you forget about them pretty quickly.
#2: Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City

Through Vampire Weekend's first two albums, there was a sense that the Ivy league band had already been figured out. The literate lyrics, allusions to New England, and sophomoric cravings for love in prose were daringly sweet, but never felt full of purpose. After all, the band's second album had a song about rice milk.

But with Modern Vampires Of The City, the band showed something. The pop precedent of "Diane Young" led the hype charge for the third record; a reminder of Contra's "Cousins," so the expectation was more of the same. But with the LP's litany of standout tracks like "Step," the religious query of "Ya Hey," and the adorning "Hannah Hunt," the band easily stepped into a transcendent phase - a pantheon album marking the peak of the band's career.
#1: The Knife - Shaking The Habitual

Shaking The Habitual is an architectural nightmare. The ultra-art pop from the The Knife melts, crawls, and springs forth on the record to a hyperventilating extreme. Every track is a journey through a maze of weird, but carefully placed steps of a human instrument. Even as The Knife clouds the work with off-kilter construction and bedazzled theatrics, the remaining core of Shaking The Habitual is yearns of humanity, of an unequivocal rush to understand one's self. The album questions every internal reflection possible, from mortality, to gender, to happiness. For 96 minutes it dares you to dig deeper into yourself, cutting through with metallic instrumentation. Some albums look to solve an issue. Shaking The Habitual looks for more issues to solve.
#25: Disclosure - Settle

Maybe Settle doesn't make the top billing for B&B's Best Of list, but few albums had a bigger impact upon arrival. The super-young duo of Guy and Howard Lawrence crafted house textures into an array of deftly memorable packages, topped with Chris Rock's angry epitaph "When A Fire Starts To Burn" and the penultimate 2013 house anthem, "Latch." Both are merely shining tokens from Settle, an album reborn in a muddled, sanitized spectacle of a gentrified eletro-pop movement - proving there's a way to be casually accessible and above the monochromatic mentality.

There isn't really a technical way to track how "warm" an album can be, which is a failure I believe on the part of engineers somewhere. It's the anointed tone of Paracosm, the second full-length album from Georgia-born producer Ernest Greene, brimming with firmly-executed lush echoes and naturalist sampling. It's everywhere on the album, even down to it's nostalgia-chic cover art, reminding listeners of a effortless - as Greene refers it - "daydream psychedelia." So while it's not easy to pin "warmth" to a title, Paracosm comes through as one of the year's best accessible productions.

Ushered with the improbable task of topping 2010's supreme High Violet, Ohio's resident indie icons The National filled in with another admirable anecdote for its profusely well-done catalog. No longer meandering between the inaccessible march of under-appreciated bands, The National - to some degree - has earned its dues, lambasting its work across national television throughout the year. They may still be the aged indie darlings, considering Trouble Will Find Me touches on death and apathetic despair, but it seems like people are catching on to the value.

If there's an antithetical comparative to the gamut of electronic and pop fusion that furiously dominated the music industry in 2013, then Daniel Lopatin is its scouring devil's advocate. On R Plus Seven, the fragmented compositions of his mathematical reflections come off as garish, even tantalizingly frightening. It's all part of a convexly creative outline, which uses commercial samples and disassembled constructions to edge the point even closer to neurosis; a place that few can even dare to approach quite as confidently.

Nineteen-year-old Archy Marshall's brimming British voice doesn't so much bellow as it croaks on 6 Feet Beneath The Moon. But the young phenom doesn't shy away, rather, he revels in his distinct snarl. It chips at the urban motif that Marshall builds on the record, playing with jazzy interludes and echoed guitar plateaus. The lyrics aren't quite there, yet, however. Marshall is - nay I repeat - 19, after all. But 6 Feet Beneath The Moon gives profound hope (and hype) for a figure that should be around for a while.
#19: Danny Brown - Old

The Detroit oddball, after a series of depressing delays from his new label Fool's Gold, returned with a spitball force that reminded everyone that a gap-toothed, fray-haired former drug dealer might be the most powerful rapper around today. Old, the second official full-length studio LP, lends its prowess to Brown's dual persona's. On side one, we see serious Brown playing with his humbled, bruising verses. It's a succinct anecdote to those who harness on Brown's image; a refreshing reminder of an upbringing that most of us don't have the faintest idea of. He doesn't sit steady on it though, as side two edges the nerves away for Brown's patent drug and sex heavy anecdotes. It's a truer perspective than one might think; a person that has more than one story worth telling.
#18: Bombino - Nomad

Admittedly, there's a newfound trepidation to whatever Black Key's frontman Dan Auerbach produces. A referendum of his own recent success, Auerbach has ventured out to help out the likes of JEFF The Brotherhood and Hanni El Khatib, refining their edges into palatable, if not nomadic interpretations of apathetic white boy blues. The finished products are not offing pieces, rather simply digestible and pragmatic ones. So when I heard he also helped out little-known Nigerian singer-songwriter Bombino, it was a little surprising.

Bombino's approach stems from his Tuereg-inspired teachings, flinging effortlessly complex orchestrations in the mold of finely-tuned guitar blues. Maybe, in the end, a lot of that was Auerbach. And if so, credit where its due; the work here - allowing Bombino to flow freely with his Nigerian roots and intermittent psych-magic - is masterful.
#17: Tim Hecker - Virgins

Possibly, for one fraction of a second, you forget what kind of music Tim Hecker produces. An electronic composer of sorts, Hecker's aim is assuredly finite on Virgins, even seconds into the opener "Prism." It's a lurching, crawling track breathing heavy drone down the neck of the listener. It's tantalizing, like watching your dreams play out over and over in front of you. You look for niches, new paths in your madness as you constantly try to figure things out. But as soon as you do, Virgins moves on; an impossible, endless metaphor for physiological reality. It's best not to get too caught up in the moments, because its so easy to get lost here - a terrifically unique reason to listen.

In a year precluded with epic electronic masterpieces, Norway's Kvelertak produced its best metal album with already defined parameters. Cycling black metal and brutal hard rock, the band's sophomore release tooled only with elements that strengthened the genre. But rather than muddle in black metal's dystopian pathology, Meir comes off with Mastodon-level appeal; a meticulously crafted, genuine reach for an epic that eschew's Heavy Metal with more realistic promise.

Cooing with impossibly cool rhythms, hushed vocals, and rich subtextures, James Blake has affirmed himself to be one of the most casually cool figures in the business. His works reigns in sweet, dire emotive distance without much overtone of perfectionism, despite working in touches from Euro dub, soul, pop, and bass all into one. Overgrown works as a refining maturity over his 2011 self-titled debut; cutting the frill and honing in on humming choruses, both dark and pleasantly atmospheric.
#14: Smith Westerns - Soft Will

Chicago glam rock trio Smith Westerns faced and uphill climb to revival. After a harrowing experience at the 2011 Pukkelpop festival, when the band's stage collapsed and killed three people on site and injured dozens of others, the band's meddle was likely tested. At the time, the trio were already treading water, releasing two quality albums but still lucked out of any breakthrough moments. Soft Will didn't come with much hype, despite Smith Westerns' emergence in the late 2000s, so maybe its unreal quality went by the wayside. It's a testament to a newfound maturity of the group, with meticulous pacing through and through without losing a microcosm of pop principle. The choruses boom, the vocals ebb, and guitarist Max Kakacek continues to affirm his place among today's best guitarists.
#13: Alexander Spit - A Breathtaking Trip to That Otherside

Spit, born Alexander Manzano, crowned 2013 with a gamut of noteworthy material. January's A Breathtaking Trip to That Otherside was followed by his self-released instrumental Mansions 2 and recently with his West coast ode to beloved fallen criminal Dillinger. But it's his first entrant to the year that still reigns as his strongest. A cautious blend of DIY aesthetics and superstar bravado, the 25-year-old rapper sits out of the scene as a confusing but welcoming blend of conscious styles but not overly serious demeanor. While listening through the LP, his first big-time release, there's an opportunity to make him out to be anything; a tactical producer, a West coast prodigy, a haze beat proprietor. #12: Milo - Cavalcade

Curiosity lends itself to improbable strengths for Hellfyre Club upstart Milo. The Wisconsin rapper is so tapped into the boundaries of what he can do with it that it's impossible to see where he turns next. His first two 2013 releases, the dual EP's Things That Happen At Day/Things That Happen At Night, gave unforeseen promise on that end, but his free album Cavalcade launches it even further. The sampling ranges from James Blake to America to Kanye West, while divulging into what makes his past, present, and future minds tick. He calls it "art rap," a term that subtlety defaces other subgenres. Unintentional, sure, but he makes himself rap music's most bright new figure even without saying it.
#11: DARKSIDE - Psychic

It's hard to say how much pressure producer Nicolas Jaar seems to be putting on others in his field. A Brown graduate, Jaar his already found his reputation as a textural wizard with his solo work, as well as his previous stint in DARKSIDE alongside guitarist Dave Harrington. Performing live, Jaar's shown his delicate perceptions as an interpreter, bringing brush strokes of house, psychedelia, funk, and bass into nearly any orchestration. With Pyschic, Jaar clearly takes his time to cleanse his approach, focusing on the flows of his movements between Harrington's. Its deftly perfected, but doesn't leave any of Jaar's obsessive ends untended. It's also terrifyingly intimidating for anyone competing against Jaar, seeing as how he's always one step beyond anyone's expectations.

Sometimes its hard to believe how much an artist must wade through to get to where they are. Singer-songwriter's Cass McCombs early struggles in the industry are well-documented, but 10 years after the release of his debut LP A, those struggles seem fortunately distant.

The California-born McCombs, who released his seventh album Big Wheel And Others back in October, has found critical success as one of the more consistent darlings of the indie folk scene. But before all of this, McCombs was nothing more than a poor, traveling musician, trying to edge his way through in the late 90s and early 2000s. Knowing that, the dour subjects on Big Wheel And Others, such as the lead track - a spoken minute long session between McCombs and a drug-addled child - start to make more sense.

It's not a constant motif for the project, but rather a tipping point for McCombs jumping into a twisted perception of Americana. Murder, mystery, and a constant feeling of drifting helplessness come to pass on the record. But Big Wheel ... is big enough to let McCombs dance around other elements, giving more credence to the vast openness of his Western inspirations.

He'll be making his way to Philadelphia's newest venue Boot & Saddle Friday, December 13 alongside Arboretum for an intimate showcase. Tickets are on sale now for a modest $13, but don't forget to check out Boot & Saddle's awesome menu and drink list.

Two months back, we highlighted "Ax//s," the first cut from Egyptrixx's newest effort A/B Til Infinity. Since then, the producer has released the album, an hour-long "scrapbook" of ideas that inspired the new LP, and now this mammoth (MAMMOTH) mix Music To ... DRONE Out To.

I've been doing this for quite a while, scouring the internet for mix after mix for endless hours. But never, ever, have I seen anything put together quite like this. Music To ... DRONE Out To reaches almost seven hours. Seven. The selections here, which features the work of Oneohtrix Point Never and Tim Hecker, among a litany of others, also apparently inspired Egyptrixx's new work. Southern California live screenprinting company Hit + Run might seem like an odd platform to release compilations, but the company - founded by Brandy Flower and Mike Crivello back in 2005 - has been curating these for a while now.

The group, which has previously held events at Coachella and SXSW, debuted the 777 29-track effort, which features the likes of B&B favorites Jeremiah Jae, Ras_G, Zeroh, Knxwledge, Kutmah, and plenty more.
Celebrating Ras_G's birthday, the off-kilter producer has brought out an unconsciously spirited remix of his own "Injera, Lentils and Kale" alongside his Afrikan Space Program. Frequent collaborator Zeroh throws versus in the mind-melding remix, which features a video from Protius of G and friends at LA's Mom Alim's Ethiopian Restaurant.

A sincere happy birthday to G, one of the year's best producers. And as he says, "You can't fail when you're fuckin with kale."

A couple weeks back we hit up the preview of Lee Bannon's Ninja Tune debut LP, with the teaser for "Value 10" - a cab-driver sampled, twisted single.

Now, Bannon has released the full-effort, which makes the cab portion a little more clear at the end. And by clear, I mean it's totally unfiltered and you can hear a cab driver trying to score coke from Bannon and his producer (info via Dazed Digital).

Still lurking in the pantheon of artists that can never be ignored, UK producer Burial has returned with the brand new three track Rival Dealer EP. On the title track, available below, Burial flexes his supernatural ability to comb Euro-fused dub with morose house-inspired beats. While that might sound similar to most of his work, "Rival Dealer" does show newer, more frenetic pace and vocal sampling as well.

Listen to "Come Down To Us" and "Hiders" below as well, courtesy of Hyperdub. Order Rival Dealer here.
With the jump from her long-time label affiliate 4AD, to the major-label owned Republic/Loma Vista, St. Vincent is ready for a prime-time debut; with a song that almost immediately references masturbation.

"Birth In Reverse," from her self-titled fourth album, features the sticky, chugging bass familiar with her name, is a step in a slightly new direction for the singer-songwriter, who refers to her new record as, "a party record you could play at a funeral.”

The bluesy garage effort is highlighted by Shelby Hohl's animated violence, which ends up being much more satanic than you might expect. Shortly after the official release of his new EP Lost Here, producer Synkro revealed the four-track effort via YouTube, making it available to stream in full. The first two tracks from the piece features the hushed vocal styling of Manos, while the latter allow the Manchester producer to toy around with more ambient structuring.

As well as his YouTube unveiling, Synkro also brought out his brand new mix from Thump's Mixed By podcast. From Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds terminally underrated February LP Push The Sky Away, directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard have brought out their darkened live video performance for the 8-minute epic "Higgs Boson Blues."

Like most Cave pieces, "Higgs Boson Blues" drags and drips until the heart of the song can't take it anymore, with the Australian singer punching out every bit of emotion left.
With the fourth installment to its ongoing Testpressing series, producer duo Demdike Stare have released two unbelievably brutal, anachronistic tracks with "Fail" and "Null Results."

The former bleeds distressing distant echoes, drumming up to a hurling, deconstructive ending. That may sound remotely boastful, but rest assured "Fail" delivers in such a profound way that there's no way of possibly overstating it.

While "Null Results" doesn't have the provocative "aw" of "Fail," it does well to comb a little acid house into the effort. Stream both tracks below courtesy of Modern Love.

The newest entrant in the impossibly endless class of incredible new producers comes from Harlem resident vhvl, with her probably impossible to pronounce nine-track album myrrh.

Each track is equally hard to say, with none longer than three letters and pretty much absent of verbs. Hell, one of them isn't even letters, just two infinity symbols next to each other. I'm not that great at math but I'm pretty sure infinity x infinity cancels everything out too. So is the title really nothing?!

Anyway, the beats are strange, the loops are dark, and the album is awesome. Stream it below and download it at vhvl's Bandcamp.
After finally announcing the release of his upcoming Rock Konducta series, the world's greatest living producer Madlib has given out one of the first tracks from the series with "Hold The Organ."

The vinyl-only release of Volume One (a two part series) comes December 10, with a more diverse package of the two parts coming in spring of next year. Until then, listen to the new track below, courtesy of Madlib's own Invazion label.
As part of his six-track eponymous Vapauteen EP, producer Shawn O'Sullivan released the new video for the self-categorized "brutal electronic" track "Basilisk."

Dealing with the paranoid, hard-line techno base of the track, the video is a fragmented series of graphic distortions, which only help to keep up with its frenetic pace. Check out below and order Vapauteen today on L.I.E.S.
Mixed in all the madness of Black Friday's Record Store Day was this brand new take from modern soul maestro Charles Bradley, with his heavy 7" single "Ain't It A Sin."
The 65-year-old singer churns out the painful tune over The Bulletts perfectly modeled blues/funk compositions; a perfect companion piece for The Screaming Eagle Of Soul.
After dropping hints at a new album in the near future, Philadelphia's own The War On Drugs released the utterly fantastic lead single to the 2014 LP, with "Red Eyes."

The free-floating psyche pop efforts drips in a beautiful, swirling haze of light distortion and echoing keys. It might be pretty late in for 2013, considering that every media outlet has already let out most of its year end Best Of lists. But damn if "Red Eyes" doesn't deserve some consideration for the year's best tracks.

Stream it below. The War On Drugs' new LP Lost In The Dream will be out Mach 18 on Secretly Canadian. And to mark the release, the band will be performing the first portion of next year's tour at Union Transfer in its native city.
